Nature NotesWe may not be enjoying glorious summer weather as I write this (June l6th) but the past month has presented me with quite a lot of interest. Several trout have been seen on more than one occasion by the bridge at the Knapp, whilst the goldfish that was there for some weeks appears to have moved down river and grown a bit larger since I saw one while on the seven bridges walk recently. I can report that the rabbit and hare populations are thriving since there have been several sightings of small baby rabbits recently. It is surprising how fast hares can move. Whilst descending the hill from Baydon to Aldbourne one evening, a hare was running down the middle of the road: in spite of a car behind it, the stupid creature did not try to run into the hedge until a side track was reached. It may not be the weather to bring out the butterflies but I have seen my first burnet moth of the season with its red hind wings but it only had one red spot on each of its black fore wings instead of the usual six on each wing. Nearby, the bedstraw had quite a lot of cuckoo spit caused by the immature froghopper to be found within: the adults can be black and usually pass unnoticed. Although some of the wild flowers such as the cow parsley are already
setting seed, others are taking their place such as the pyramidal orchid
with its rose purple flowers. When near the canal bank at Denfold a few
weeks ago, I noticed a cloud of white which on closer inspection turned
out to be Meadow Saxifrage: it seems there is always something new to
find. Quite a variety of sedges have caught my eye this month. Perhaps
all the rain has made them grow larger than usual. For the most part they
have triangular stems. Rosie Pauline Bird NotesMother Nature sometimes shows her darker side! I have heard of two tales where this was demonstrated. The first was a Great Spotted Woodpecker which approached a Great Tits nest, widened the opening and helped itself to the young which were inside. The second incident was a Hobby breaking into a House Martins nest and stealing the young. On both occasions the parents put up a sterling defence against overwhelming odds! Staying with Hobbys, there have been a number of sightings around the
village. From one bird of prey to another the Red Kite. Sightings
have come from Wicha and Ramsbury but I saw a group of four flying low
in a tight circle over Marlborough at the beginning of June. John Marshall RainfallRainfall for the month to 18 June was 3.93 inches, average 2.44 inches.
