Nature Notes

During the past month we seem to have experienced all the seasons, as apart from many dull and wet days much of the country had snow on 20 March, although we only had sleet, within two days a mild sunny day gave us the false impression that spring had arrived.
In spite of the inclement weather the spring flowers are now with us - butterbur by the river and with all the wet a patch of kingcups have appeared a little further along. Fritillaries are another moisture loving plant although mine are flowering in quite a dry location. The blackthorn as yet does not seem to be giving such a grand show as in some years.. The weather always seems to be cold when that and other members of the plum family are in bloom, will it be a good or a bad plum harvest this year I wonder ?
Sunny days now bring forth the brimstone and peacock butterflies, do they hibernate on the colder days ? The day when the sun was shining an orange mark appeared on a sheet out to dry - propolis a substance left by a bee. Larger forms of life are now very active as a result I have received reports of what was probably a mink being killed on the road in the Kintbury area, a heron was seen to fly off with a vole, the tail was seen hanging from its beak. A week ago I think that it was a weasel that crossed the road near Lamplands. On another occasion a frog was lying on its back, I flipped it over and on my return it had gone, one that did not get run over in a lethargic state. Have you seen the road sign for frogs ? I saw one in the Hermitage area recently. A great surprise was to find some droppings on my lawn which a book suggested were those of a deer, had it wandered into the village at night and being frightened by a car jumped the fence ?
Have you seen the dark duck with her ducklings in the village ? Easter being rather cold may May Day be fine and warm

Bird Notes

There was an article in a national newspaper earlier this month about salmonella in wild birds. It said that Greenfinches and Sparrows were the most susceptible as they feed on bird tables where there can be a build up of faeces and old food. The article concludes ; to avoid the wild birds acquiring this disease use a mild disinfectant to clean your bird table, hopper and the surrounding area, and if it is possible move your feeders on a regular basis.
Well, the summer migrants have moved back, every bush seems to be holding a Willow Warbler, Chiff Chaff or Blackcap. On 16 April I was told of an Osprey which had been seen on the broad water at Chilton Foliat. I went the next day and was lucky enough to see it sitting nonchalantly at the top of a tree fifty feet up !

Rainfall
