Nature
Notes
How time flies, I have just realised that it is almost six years since
I started writing this monthly piece and although lots of plants and insects
etc. are seen every year, I still come upon something new from time to
time. The latest was a crayfish by the Kennet Bridge: it was there for
about a week. Do herons eat them I wonder? It may have been one of the
undesirable American ones as it was a dirty pink, whereas the English
variety is a dull muddy colour. It is said that this invader is having
an adverse effect on our native species. It has also been reported in
the Hungerford area.
Judging by the past few days our pleasant autumn sunshine is at an end.
The soil having become very dry the rain was certainly needed but may
it not be the start of excessive downpours leading to floods in some parts
of the country. A few sunny days are now needed to bring on the fungi
for the weekend foray. The variety to be found at this time of year depends
partly on the type of soil and the range of trees in the district. Fly
Agarics (red caps with white bit) usually occur under birch trees, while
the oyster mushrooms I have always found in beech woods, puff balls and
earth stars seem to depend more on soil type.
By now the insect population for the most part has gone into hibernation,
such as the butterflies most of which but not all spend the winter in
chrysalis form. The cabbage white is one such but it is surprising how
far the caterpillar crawls so as to find a suitable place. I have destroyed
quite a few climbing my back door no doubt wishing to winter under the
eaves.

Bird Notes
Autumn is always a fascinating time of year with summer migrants departing
for Africa and winter migrants arriving from Scandinavia and Russia. One
of the summer migrants, which was a regular visitor in the skies above
Ramsbury, was the Hobby which I last saw on 25 September. Throughout this
summer I have had 25 sightings of this bird, which puts all previous years
in the shade.
Another summer migrant which stopped off en-route for Africa was a juvenile
Whinchat. He appeared very tame when he perched on a fence post for at
least half an hour. A Chiff Chaff was still in song on 11 October at Seven
Bridges.
So out with the old and in with the new. Crossbills are still to be seen
in Hens Wood as are Siskin which can also be seen over Ramsbury. One group
that I saw contained 100 of these small finches. On 7 October a flight
of some 30 Redwing flew over the village - Here comes winter!
