Nature
Notes
Now autumn is with us most of the flowers are fading from our gardens
and hedgerows but there are still a few to brighten the scene, such as
the sedum (ice plant). These attract the butterflies which seem to have
appeared rather late this year. I have seen a few speckled woods and red
admirals, but mainly cabbage whites, small and large, also tortoiseshells.
Only one rather faded painted lady has been noticed and I doubt if it
had long to live.
During the past months the canal banks in the Hungerford area have been
quite interesting with large clumps of flowering orange balsam, not a
native but an introduction from North America. Various reeds have been
flowering, the largest being the common reed, which as the name suggests
is the most widespread. Large patches of the paler flowered reed, sweet
grass is also to be seen. Last weekend an unexpected find was a patch
of autumn crocus on a green ride in Brail Wood near Great Bedwyn. It seems
that there is always something new to find. In the same area a muntjac
deer crossed our path.
This is the time of year when insects begin to come into the house. Daddy
longlegs, which hatch from leather jackets, can be a pest in lawns. A
slender black insect with a long ovipostor and orange upper legs was crawling
near the door, possibly an ichneumon fly which is a wasp parasite. If
there were more of them there might not be so many wasps to devour my
grapes.
Various fungi are now showing their fruiting bodies. On a leylandii stump
I have a tuft of "plums and custard" (Tricholomopsis rutilans)
so called because of its purplish cap with custard yellow gills. Soon
autumn colours will develop, already Virginia creeper is a glorious red
in places and some trees are shedding their leaves, especially the young
elms so Dutch elm disease is still with us and acorn cups are greatly
distorted due to hedgehog gall this year.

Bird Notes
Three Red Kite were seen over Ramsbury in September, another was also
reported from Savernake, a welcome return after a quiet summer. Buzzards,
Sparrowhawks and Hobby have been much in evidence in the last month. Today,16
September, I've seen all three over Ramsbury. A bit of a surprise last
month was the presence in Ramsbury and Hens Wood of Crossbill. These birds
are sporadic winter visitors relying on Pine Cones for feed. They are
quite extrovert birds and their continuous 'Chip-Chip' is a sound synonymous
of a coniferous forest.
I was recently walking in 'The Hollow' with my family when my eldest daughter,
Anna, found a Buzzard's Primary Flight Feather. This beautiful brown and
white feather is a massive 13 1/2 inches in length, and quite a find for
seven year old!
I've had a report of a sighting of an Otter near Ramsbury Manor. On the
grapevine I have also heard that an Otter was killed on a road near
Chippenham in the Spring - so you never know!!

Rainfall
The rainfall for the month to 18 September was 1.78 inches, average 2.73

Patient Representative Group
Dr Handford welcomed all present, and especially Dr Symons who will shortly
be returning to the Practice. She thanked all the patients who had supported
her through her illness, and who had sent her cards and flowers. Jan Cole
has left the nursing staff, but Karen Whitehouse is working regularly
and Avril Chadwick is returning.
As there are now five nurses in the Practice, with sometimes two on duty,
it would be helpful if patients when making appointments could tell the
receptionist the nature of the visit, e.g. special clinic, dressings,
blood tests. Plans for the new surgery will shortly be submitted to the
Local Authority. The new Great Western Hospital will be opening at the
end of November or early December
