Axford School in 1921

Joanna Wheatland has sent us a photograph taken at Axford Council School in 1921.

She writes:

"This photo belongs to my Uncle Jim Smith, who is pictured far right, second row, seated. Next to him in white is his sister Elsie, and far right front row is their brother John.

Teacher to the left is Miss Jenkins, and to the right, Miss Ball.

The boy standing to the left of Miss Ball is Rupert Watts. Boy third from left, back row, is Fred Stroud; and his sister Elsie is 5th from left second row back (last of the girls in white).

One final name is Elsie Taylor, 4th from left 3rd row back.

(I can’t vouch for the accuracy of these names, as it’s a long time ago!)

It was Jim, John & Elsie’s older brother Frank (I believe) who started ‘Smith’s of Axford’ still a going concern today, of course. The Smiths were a large family of 12 children, although 2 died young. Their father, William Charles Smith was a gamekeeper-at Ramsbury Manor, I believe, and in later years ran a bus service. The family lived opposite the church in Axford in a house set back a bit from the road – maybe called Sawyers(???).

I wonder how many of the people in this picture are still alive. Jim & John are!"
